SmartSens launches first 2-megapixel CMOS image sensor for medical applications

June 5, 2025, Shanghai, China — SmartSens (Shanghai) Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. recently announced the launch of a new 2MP ultra-small size CMOS image sensor for medical applications - SC1400ME. This new product is built on SmartSens' advanced SmartClarity -3 technology platform and is equipped with SmartSens' patented SFCPixel technology. It has many performance advantages such as high color reproduction, high sensitivity, low noise, and low power consumption, and can bring clear and stable high-quality color images to medical endoscope cameras. The SC1400ME package size is only about 1.9mm×2.5mm, which can be applied to a variety of medical endoscope equipment such as gastroenteroscopes and laparoscopes, fully helping to upgrade medical imaging capabilities.

Ultra-small size, better field of view, suitable for multiple medical applications

Medical endoscope is a medical detection instrument composed of components such as lens, image sensor, lighting source and operating device. It is small in size and slender in body. It can enter the body through the natural cavity of the human body or small surgical incision, helping doctors to complete auxiliary medical work such as detection and minimally invasive surgery.

The application scenario of endoscope in-body detection requires the overall miniaturization of imaging system components. SC1400ME adopts a compact CSP-OP package with a package size of only about 1.9mm×2.5mm, which can be well applied to multiple types of medical endoscopes such as gastroenteroscope, laparoscope, cystoscope, laryngoscope, hysteroscope, etc.

In addition, in view of the slender circular tube diameter and lens characteristics of medical endoscopes, SC1400ME adopts a medical-specific square 1:1 resolution (1400*1400), which can obtain a larger field of view and bring a better field of view to the endoscope camera.

Excellent imaging effect, creating high-definition and high-quality medical images

Through medical endoscopes, doctors can observe the tissues and organs inside the human body. The imaging effect greatly affects the accuracy of doctors' judgment of lesions and abnormalities, and is an important basis for auxiliary diagnosis and treatment. SC1400ME has many performance advantages such as high color reproduction, high sensitivity, low noise, and low power consumption. It can bring clear, bright, and stable high-definition color images to medical endoscope cameras, significantly improving the image quality of medical images.

High color reproduction

In order to accurately identify abnormalities and lesions in human tissues, medical endoscopes have high requirements for the color effects of the imaging system. SC1400ME has high color reproduction capabilities, which can effectively avoid the occurrence of color distortion, uneven color, color cast and other problems, and bring real, accurate and high-quality color images to medical endoscopes, restoring the true color and details of human internal tissues, thereby helping doctors to judge the condition more accurately and efficiently.

High sensitivity

SC1400ME is built on SmartSens' advanced SmartClarity -3 technology platform, with a pixel size of 1.12μm and equipped with SmartSens' patented SFCPixel technology. It has excellent photosensitivity and a peak quantum efficiency (peak QE) of up to 70%, which is better than the same specifications of competing products in the industry. High sensitivity can help medical endoscopes capture brighter and clearer images under low light conditions inside the human body, improving the visibility of in-vivo inspections.

Low noise

Thanks to SmartSens' patented SFCPixel technology and ultra-low noise peripheral readout circuit technology, SC1400ME significantly reduces noise while achieving higher sensitivity, and its read noise (RN) is only about 1.68e-. Excellent low noise performance can make the imaging details of the endoscope clearer and cleaner in low light environments inside the human body, which is conducive to reducing image interference and improving the efficiency and accuracy of doctors' judgment.

Low power consumption

SC1400ME adopts ultra-low power consumption design, with power consumption as low as 84.8mW, which can effectively reduce the heat generated at the top of the medical endoscope during operation, reduce the impact of excessive temperature on image quality, and make the imaging effect more stable. At the same time, the reduction in imaging heat can also reduce the impact of the endoscope's operating temperature on the internal organs of the human body, making the detection more secure.

Support MIPI/LVDS dual interface, flexible compatibility with different main controllers

Medical endoscopes are diverse in types, highly customized, and have different requirements for data transmission performance. SC1400ME supports two major mainstream interfaces, MIPI and LVDS, which can be flexibly compatible with different main controllers, fully meet the data transmission needs of different types of endoscopes, and make customized applications more convenient and worry-free.

Shi Wenjie, Vice President of Product Marketing at SmartSens, said: "With the continuous development and progress of modern medicine, visualized medicine has gradually played an increasingly important role in the fields of examination diagnosis, auxiliary treatment, etc., and the performance requirements of medical imaging have also been gradually improved. SC1400ME is SmartSens' first CMOS image sensor chip for medical endoscope applications. It is also a new market layout expansion after SmartSens' four major application fields, including smart security, smartphones, automotive electronics and industrial machine vision. During the development of the product, we have a deep insight into the needs and pain points in the field of medical endoscopy. It has many leading advantages such as ultra-small size, better frame, higher image quality, dual-interface compatibility, etc. It can be well applied to various types of medical endoscopes such as gastroenteroscopes and laparoscopy, and promote the comprehensive upgrade and development of medical imaging."
