TSMC acquires Innolux's Nan Ke plant, Innolux transforms into semiconductor packaging and testing

On August 15, TSMC announced that the company had signed a contract with Innolux Optoelectronics to purchase the Nan Ke plant and ancillary facilities from Innolux. The total transaction amount is NT$17.14 billion (approximately RMB 3.805 billion), and the purpose of acquisition is for operation and production.

It is reported that Innolux's Nan Ke plant No. 4 originally mainly produced laptops and monitoring panels. It was closed last year due to strategic considerations, and the board of directors passed a resolution to sell the plant at the end of July.

Due to the continued strong demand for TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging, it previously stated in the legal conference that it would continue to expand production. It is reported that after TSMC bought the Innolux Nan Ke plant, it will mainly be used to expand advanced packaging capacity, including technologies such as CoWoS, or a backup base for more advanced processes. The completion schedule of the plant is expected to be earlier than that of the Chiayi plant.

With the sale of the fourth plant in Southern Taiwan Science Park to TSMC, the funds may accelerate Innolux's business transformation and continue to exert efforts in new business areas such as semiconductor packaging and testing. It is understood that the 3.5-generation line in the Tainan plant has been transformed into fan-out panel-level packaging, and the fourth-generation line has been converted to produce X-ray sensors, and both have deployed semiconductor-related products.

Innolux Chairman Hong Jinyang also said that Innolux's new positioning is to be a signal and energy transmission hub hidden behind the display, and to expand the panel application field to LCD smart windows, LCD antennas, and panel-level IC packaging.
