ON Semiconductor Introduces Industry's First Intelligent Charge Controller

ON Semiconductor, which promotes energy-efficient innovation, has introduced a highly integrated single-chip mobile power solution for the development of next-generation lithium-ion battery-powered products. The LC709501F Li-Ion Battery Complete Solution provides a wide range of power and voltage / current output ranges of 5 V (V), 9 V and 12 V operation with a maximum FET charge and discharge capacity of 30 watts (W) with a simple FET selection.

The LC709501F determines what type of device is connected and automatically selects the fastest charging method available. Sophisticated users can even reprogram the LC709501F to support custom charge / discharge curves, as well as USB Type-C and PD "Policy Engine" capabilities. The single-chip solution includes integrated fuel gauge functionality, configurable I / O, LED drivers, I2C interfaces, and pre-drivers for external power MOSFETs to provide system flexibility. ON Semiconductor offers design reference kits for rapid time-to-market. The LC709501F supports a variety of different output power levels up to 30 W by changing the external MOSFET. In addition, the single-chip has an integrated USB 2.0 full-speed host controller.

The USB host controller of the LC709501F supports interworking with iOS and Android applications to enable the device to communicate with connected smartphones to use its display to display information about battery health and the charging process (charge time, battery life, completion Of the number of charging cycles, etc.). The device is compatible with smart phone manufacturers to use proprietary charging protocols (such as fast charge and high-pass fast charge) to speed up the charging time. To ensure operational life, the LC709501F also provides overcurrent, overvoltage and redundant battery protection mechanisms, as well as a thermistor for temperature monitoring. The LC709501F supports an operating temperature range of -40 ° C to + 85 ° C.

"There is a growing demand for portable electronics anywhere, anytime, anywhere, and mobile power is certainly more prevalent in the years to come," said Matthew Tyler, director of strategy and product development lines for ON Semiconductor's Digital and DC-DC division. "Accurate and reliable charge capacity indication And the ability to support the latest fast-charge standards, especially as the capacity of mobile power grows over time, the precision of the mobile power source will be increased to allow the battery to be fully charged as quickly as possible and to minimize inconvenience. The best-in-class LC709501F charge controller will enable the creation of compact, energy-efficient, feature-rich mobile power that will simplify and accelerate the introduction of next-generation mobile power solutions with a breadth of functionality that will enhance the user experience and maintain a high level of security .
